Tree Pose

Tree Pose is a hip opener. Much different from “Tree Pose” in other western forms of yoga, the raised foot is not tucked into the inner thigh, it is rested high on the front of the thigh of the standing leg. This helps with flexibility and opening the hips. Only one set of Tree is performed before moving into Toe Stand.

Sanskrit: Tadasana

Benefits: Tree Pose is great for improving posture and balance. It increases flexibility in the ankles, knees, and hip joints. Tree also strengthens the internal oblique muscles which can help in preventing hernias.

Technical Points:

  • Raised foot lifts all the way up, outside of the foot making contact with the thigh (not the sole)

  • Sole of the foot is facing the ceiling

  • Push your hips forward

  • Gently push your raised knee back

  • Both knees in one line

  • Upper body lean back a couple of inches

  • Stretch your spine up to the ceiling

  • Suck your stomach in

  • Two hips in one line

  • Two shoulders in one line

  • Palms together at the center of your chest

  • Standing leg locked

Important Things to Remember:

  • Focus on one spot for balance

  • Be careful of the raised knee

  • If your foot slips, continue to hold your raised foot with your opposite hand

  • Refrain from sticking your butt out to keep raised foot balanced on thigh

  • Breathe normally

  • Stay in pose, as still as possible, for 60 seconds or longer
