BLOWING IN FIRM - BREATHING EXERCISE

Blowing in Firm Pose is the second breathing exercise and the last asana in the Traditional Hot Yoga sequence. As you forcefully exhale, you will be increasing the elasticity of your lungs. Blowing in Firm is designed to push out carbon dioxide and replenish it with fresh oxygen.

Sanskrit: Kapalbhati in Vajrasana

Benefits: Aside from increasing your lung elasticity, Blowing in Firm strengthens your abdominal organs, increasing circulation to them. It also stimulates the digestive system.

Technical Points:

  • Kneel down, sitting on your heels

  • No inhale, only exhale

  • Pull your stomach in and out

  • Hands on the knees

  • Arms straight, lock your elbows

  • Spine is straight

  • Shoulders relaxed

Important Things to Remember:

  • Sit up straight

  • Blow out very strong, the inhale will happen naturally

  • Only the stomach moves, nothing else

  • Abdominal wall is perfectly relaxed

  • It’s ok to feel a little dizzy or cramping in the stomach

  • Cycle your breath 60 times each set

  • Second set is at a faster pace

  • The vigorous stomach movements take practice to perform properly; to accelerate your progress place a hand on or around your naval as you begin your exhalations to be mindful of pulling your stomach in as you exhale
