Destination Dolomites: A Week in the Italian Alps
Lago De Braies, in our retreat itinerary
Next June we're taking a Thrive Breakaway to the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain range in Northern Italy where pale stone peaks rise straight out of rolling green meadows.
Over four Sundays in our newsletter we previewed the trip a piece at a time. This is all of it in one place: the region, the hotel, the food, and what we'll actually do with the week.
Come Up for Air
If you haven't seen the Dolomites, they're hard to describe without sounding like you're exaggerating. Sharp pale peaks, bright against the sky, sitting above meadows so green they look lit from underneath. The light does remarkable things to them at either end of the day. And the air is so clean it almost feels like a different substance. You notice it in the first ten minutes and you keep noticing it all week.
We’ve been to Southern Italy as a community a few years ago. Now it’s time to explore another region. The Dolomites give us that new perspective. Trails that wander through alpine forest and then open onto a view that stops the conversation. Storybook villages full of South Tyrolean culture, where Italy and the Alps have been sharing a kitchen for a very long time. A pace of life that seems to remember what living is actually for.
It's that rare place that balances adventure, wellness, and real rest.

Where You'll Wake Up
There's a version of travel where the room is just somewhere to put your suitcase. This isn't that trip.
Our home for the week is a peaceful, family-run 4-star alpine wellness hotel in the heart of the Dolomites. Mountain-view rooms with private balconies. Warm South Tyrolean hospitality from a local team that treats guests like returning family.
That last part sounds like brochure language until you've experienced the alternative. At a big resort you're a room number for a week. At a family-run place in South Tyrol, by about day three someone knows how you take your coffee and asks how the hike went, and means it.
And when you come down from the trails there's a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, an indoor pool, massage and spa therapists on site, a panoramic terrace, a cozy lounge, a library, and quiet corners built for doing absolutely nothing.
The recovery isn't a luxury bolted onto the trip. It's what makes the next day possible.
Practice in the morning. Mountains in the afternoon. Sauna before dinner. Sleep with the window open.
Every room on our retreat has a mountain view
The Table
If you're picturing pasta and red sauce, picture something else. South Tyrol was Austrian until 1919, and every town here still has two names. Bolzano is also Bozen.
The kitchen tells the same story. Speck cured and smoked in mountain air, canederli bread dumplings, apple strudel from the orchards below, with Italian olive oil and lightness layered over the top. And schlutzkrapfen, a half-moon ravioli of spinach and ricotta that's exactly what happens when two kitchens share a house for a hundred years.
Your week includes generous buffet breakfasts, multi-course dinners together every evening, and a daily afternoon tea with homemade local treats.
All of which is lovely. And none of it is the real answer.
Ask anyone who's been on a Thrive Breakaway what they remember and it's almost never just the food. It's the people, the connections that happen during a meal.
The third night, when the conversation runs an hour past dessert. The particular kind of laughing that only happens when nobody's checking a phone and nobody has anywhere to be.

What if hiking isn't your thing?
One comment we've gotten is, "I'd love to come, but hiking isn't really my thing." If you'd love to see this part of the world but would rather skip the three hikes, that's completely fine. The 2026 groups were about a 50/50 split of hikers and non-hikers.
Some people travel with a partner who hikes while they don't, and both of them come home saying it was their trip. Every day there's the sauna and steam bath, the pool, the terrace, a short walk into the village, and beautiful sights to see with an easy cab ride, and the group comes back together for dinner.
Daily yoga and relaxation with a panoramic view
We've been leading these trips for years now, and the part that still gets us is what happens to people by about day four. The rush wears off. People who showed up carrying a lot start laughing at breakfast and stay at the table longer than they meant to. That's the reason we keep doing this, and it's what we want for you next June.
